Krugle

As a geek, technology evangelism is what comes easy to me. But too much of “thought leadership” and excessive reading, leads to information fatigue or a repetitive stress syndrome of the mind. And mostly the mind is captivated by the same lazy thoughts, as there are no emperical feedback mechanisms, attributed mainly to the lack of time to implement those thoughts. Let me quote Albert Einstein here,

“Reading, after a certain age, diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.”

Luckily, for the past few months, I have been using Krugle with a beta support invitation, now I think they have opened up their beta for the general audience. Check them out here and a demo here.

If you need to do some rapid prototyping and unwind your mind via action more than thought, providing for some refreshing creativity, maybe Krugle is a good start.

Making a Difference - Redux

It was August when I had promised that I will followup with a Redux for Making a Difference. Well before the year flips into the next, I want to fulfill atleast some promises.

Below are some links to work of some amazing people, all of whom I have been a secret admirer of.

All of them have something in common, and if you follow it carefully, you can connect the dots. Well, I don’t want to test your patience. The common thread linking all of them is “Reuters Digital Vision Program“. If any of you have any secret plans of a sabbatical and want to invest your time in something really worthy and interesting I think this is it, supported by Stanford University, and backed by Reuters Foundation, this program provides an opportunity to contribute something significant.

Of course, if you do not know, Atanu Dey’s RISC - Rural Infrastructure and Services Commons evolved from here, and his RISC program has been endorsed and supported by none other than Vinod Khosla himself.

Also, I am an India-phile or Indophil (don’t state the obvious did you say ?) and below are some links to work of some Indians from the same program.

Of course hats off to all the fellows-of-the-program from all nationalities who have contributed their time and efforts in this initiative. So what are you waiting for ?

P.S.: If any of you want to brainstorm on ideas to enroll yourself, I would be happy to be the Devil’s advocate on it. So feel free to shoot me your comments either here or through mail to ynmanju4us at gmail dot com

Echo Boomers

This is a prelude to Bangalore vs BayArea - Part IV and hence a mezzanine entry between Bangalore vs BayArea - Part III and likely-to-be-posted Part IV. Some of the questions that I had left unanswered with Part III were :

  • What are the most important ideas Bangalore can emulate from Bay Area?
  • How to fuel entreprenurial hunger in the otherwise complacent Indian “Think Tank”?
  • What are the tactical, strategic and demographical cohorts that needs to be looked at?

For starters its the Echo Boomers. This generation is coming of age, and its inevitable. What’s more, being a band of around 80 million in strength, and with an individualistic attitude never before seen in history, this generation will redefine the economic markets world over. A consumer behaviour that is individualistic in nature will always demand “Tailored & Esoteric solutions” rather than “Generic products”.

An assertive, self assured, self empowered generation, it will have a $180 billion in annual spending capacity according to Doug Akin, managing partner of Mr. Youth, a marketing company that specializes in youth marketing.

So what are some of the details that the new startups coming out of Bangalore & BayArea need to concentrate on.

  • This group spends around 15 hours per week on the web, doing everything from downloading music to chatting with friends, to looking for deals.
  • This group is highly internet savvy and responds to electronic communication, they seek out opinions of others, understand and access instant information routinely and they will mix and match products to satisfy their needs for style and convenience.

If you want to avoid a mid-career crisis, and grow consistently with the changing market, follow the pulse of the “Echo Boomers”. What are you waiting for ?. Get started by googling “Echo Boomers”

Peter Drucker

My salutes to the Man, Peter Drucker who passed away today. The visionary who managed to predict the course of the future of business, many times, has had huge influences on stalwarts like Winston Churchill, Bill Gates, Jack Welch. The names speak for themselves, so Peter Drucker definitely was the rarest in this century.

His book of 1949, the “Concept of a Corporation” is said to have started the “Field of Consulting” which has become an industry which feeds me now. So, I owe not only some of the insights that I have learnt to this man, but also my means of living. So, hats-off to Peter Drucker.

Most importantly like all geniuses, he was not just a “Management Guru” and most people don’t know that he was also a man who touched the lives of many, and some of his insights about life, about adapting to changes and to finally age, have truly captured my imagination. Thank you Mr. Peter Drucker.

If you are more interested, google on Peter Druker particularly “My Life as a Knowledge Worker“.

TR35 - Under 35

Watch me at 35 ! This is a phrase that I coined nearly 6 years ago, and have used it liberally ever since in all social get-togethers. In fact people have started to poke fun at me for using this so frequently.

But technology review has released their top technolgy innovators under age 35, for their October 2005 issue. In fact they have changed it from TR100 to TR35. Did they steal the 35 cue from someone I know ?.

What is interesting to note is that there are 5 or 6 Indians listed in there. And among the 3 people that are profiled, Naramsimha Chari is one of them. I am delighted to see many young Indians on the list. All people on the list make technology geeks like me really proud, their ideas, vision, and relentless pursuit of their beliefs is worth emulating. The judges for this list from Technology Review, comprise of some really well established names, what more can I say, just check it out yourself.

Declining Interests

Over the past fortnight, I have observed numerous articles about America losing its competitiveness in Science and Technology. My opinion, people and their “Cool Hunting” nature is to be blamed for the most part. If history is any evidence, this is what we have observed.

Take the manufacturing industry, some 30-40 years ago, manufacturing jobs were honorable in the US, but today no body in US or Western countries want to work in the Shop floor which involves huge amounts of sweat and strain. But people in China are happily churning out the volumes.

Lets take the airline industry here in the US. At one time, being an airline pilot was thought to be glamorous work. But bankrupt airlines, falling salaries, the threat of hijacking, the grind of globe hopping, and a life of chronic jet lag have made the profession much less romantic and less desirable than it once was. But in the Booming Airlines industry in India this seems to be exactly the kind of jobs the youths are looking for. I sincerely believe that the nature of the jobs or nature of the industry as such, does not change, its the nature of the people that changes. Yes, the geographical locations might change, but if you are interested you should be willing to pursue them in which ever part of the Globe. Otherwise, One man’s menial job is other man’s dream job.

The IT industry has also started to take a toll due to this search for non-challance. At one point IT was a youth movement, an infusion of cool ideas and fresh technologies, having brains was really cool. But with Outsourcing and Offshoring, long hours and attention to detail, the effects of the “cool steroids” began to fade. Tech jobs have turned out to be monotonous, uncreative and easily farmed. The youths here started looking for other avenues, and hence stayed away from Science and Technology.

The results of this attitude has already started to show with US beginning to lose its competitiveness. Maths, Science and Technology decline has only been in the minds of people. For as long as I can remember Maths, Science and Information technology skills have supported economic expansion in all sectors. Its only that the generations after the 70’s here in the US and in most Western countries, that it has lost relevance & hence its direction. The parents and current generation kids alike, seem to have lost interest.

Its little wonder, that the Asian Century has begun. Can a few thinking parents, save the West ?. Overall, I think this cartoon summarizes it all !.

Ubiquity Redux

Interesting choice of words for the title, how do you bring back something that is present everywhere. I have no clues why my subconscious mind is more creative than my active mind, but lets save that for another day. Well, I just wanted to draw or bring back your attention to Google as a company, which we know is present everywhere. Just finished watching this 57 min video of a talk by Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google at the University of Washington.

By the end of the talk, I was completely engrossed with the possibilities/opportunities that lie ahead of us, and vastly important challenges that we can all contribute to solving, and more importantly how Google as a company is constantly reshaping itself or for that matter how sharply focussed a company can be about its goals and challenges.

Very engaging, to be honest as I write this paragraph right here, it just struck me how Eric Schmidt as a person can direct your mind and vision to addressing these issues, and how he projects the Company and his business space to the foreground while completely blurring himself into the background.

Since he is addressing this to the academic community, its leaves you with a very refreshing feeling of inquisitiveness, rather than the shallowness of the corporate pitches we are used to. Its dated May 26 2005, about 2 months ago, but I highly recommend that you make time to watch this.

Compatability Matters

Now this is how you weave technology into life. I was catching up with JavaOne 2005 updates and in the process stumbled upon this. I have provided many postings about Jonathan’s articles on this blog, about participation age, about open source and how technology is changing our day-2-day lives. But Sun has gone a step further and here it is trying to say something about genesis of life itself. Check it for yourself.

In the image below these are some goodies Sun apparently had for this year’s JavaOne.

    CompatabilityMatters

BTW, I also learnt last year’s JavaPolis 2004’s theme was “Only the Best Get In” & this year in JavaOne we are talking about “Compatability Matters“. Sun is definitely advocating technology for love rather than love of technology these days !

SCP/SP - SocialNetworks

We have seen the personalization of internet happening pretty rapidly, and major companies like Yahoo, Google, MSN are trying to find a foot hold in this new “personalization abstraction - the personal internet“. Remember when Computer was getting personalized, yes, yes I am talking about the PC era. There was a WAR to win it, we are on a similar course right now. I know a few years ago the same “My web” has done the rounds, but that was just too early for any sort of adoption, this time around everybody knows what they are fighting for. Okay, my mind just flicked & morphed the previous sentence from “Cinderella Man:) .

Sorry for the digression. Now, if the Network is the Computer, “Personalized Web” is our “Personal Computer”, what will be the new Network ?. Well, Social Networks will be the new Network. And me along with a few friends have been using a good tool called getoutfoxed for the past couple of weeks. Try it and see for yourself.

I am making a Prediction and Mark my words - Just like IPNetworks with Ethernet and TCP/IP revolutionized “Computing” as we know, SocialNetworks with Identities and SCP/SP (Social Context Protocol)/(SocialNetworking Protocol) — all right I made this up , don’t hit me **ducking for cover** — will revolutionize the new forms of “Computing”. And hey, I might have spilled the beans on some great ideas here.

World just changed…

2b || !2b = ?” has just been answered. Looks like both Yahoo, and Google are lurking around CaptiveAdaptations. Ask me why ?. Well here are the announcements. Google launched “personalized search” and Yahoo started “My Web 2.0“. Check the screenshot.

In effect as of yesterday, we no longer have to be with Classical Web. Yes, Classical web is dead, Long live Classical web. In my aforeblogged article I was just wondering how long I should stick with the Classical Web. Lo and behold, my prayers just got answered 2b || !2b = Web2.0B !!

To dive into the details and comparisions — this is based on the first sightings, a detailed blogentry will follow — in my opinion YAHOO WINS the initial battle for the following reasons

  • It has got good Tag capabilities
  • The Tag Cloud display is also neat
  • It provides 3 levels of sharing: private, community and public

So start Tagging, and Share Tagging, Go Tagocrazy.. Hail Tagocracy !!
