Shinkansen - Kyoto2Tokyo

Today for the first time I travelled in a Japanese bullet train on the JR rail. The Shinkansen series of bullet trains are definitely an excellent mode of transport. I travelled on the Tokaido Shinkansen which runs form Kyoto-Tokyo in less then 2.5 hours. The speeds that the Tokaido Shinkansen can reach is over 300 km/hr.

Shinkansen

The Kyoto-Tokyo leg of the Tokaido Shinkansen is also the first shinkansen line that was operational. We have nearly 3-4 such trains every hour, and the network of these lines, the accuracy and timing that is still maintained in reaching destinations, the real time graphical display are definitely something that will stick in my memory for quite sometime.

I have many things to discover and learn here, as there are various network of rails, the subways, the express lines and shinkansen’s. All in all right from my trip from Osaka to Kyoto and from Kyoto to Tokyo the JR Expressways, and the JR lines have captured my imagination, and have left me wanting for more !. Can’t we replicate this in India ? I am sure it will decongest all our cities and rid us of the brutal daily commute pains.

August Initiatives

August is a month, I always found very hectic. Let me enumerate.

2001 - Got laid off on July 31st from a Streaming Media company in SanFrancisco/Fremont, and had to scamper/take-initiative for retaining my H1.

2002 - On August 14th clinched an initiative in Retail Management space and was shuttling between Los Angeles, Sunnyvale and Bangalore (came down to Bangalore on Aug 18)

2003 - Moved and relocated to Saint Louis, Missouri on Aug 11th from Fremont/Sunnyvale in California for an Offshore Initiative in the Telecom Value Chain.

2004 - Was in Pune India for an Indian expansion and also toured North India, Delhi, Agra, Mathura, came back to Bangalore for a friends engagement, went back to Pune and then on Aug 15th flew back to Saint Louis.

2005 - Flew to Mumbai/Delhi/Banglaore in India on Aug 29th from San Mateo California, for an initiative in Identity Management and rushed back to US on Sep 6th.

2006 - First visit to Goa for an entire week, start of a development initiative for projects in Airline Industry, in Virgina US, a personal initiative to rush my Mom to hospital for an operation, who was admitted for around 12 days.

Is August generally a month of turbulence, or an agent of change ? Don’t know, can’t say. Hind sight is always 20/20 and in retrospect it looks like the odds of such change driven events all happening in August are high. A topic for an elaborate introspection and debate sometime later in my life.

Speaking on initiatives, there are some which I have plans for starting, within the next 2-3 years, like running in  Bangalore International Marathon.

Non Sequitur

Its strange how many times we react to circumstances, owing to our impulsive instincts. As I learnt it the hard way, its always best to respond than to react to any stimulus or external triggers, even during casual conversations.

Today, as part of a daily conversation I casually made the statement “Decent guys usually don’t talk to girls“, which a few of my colleagues took offence to, and the impulsive nature of their rebuttal just blinded their vision to the logical fallacy of their argument. I am not sure why they got so animated, but I am here trying to unravel the mystery of their irritation.

There were possibly 2 mistakes that took place. First, was the implicit assumption of the counter statement (to the original statement), that only “Indecent guys speak to girls” or “If some guy speaks to girls, then he is indecent“. Both of these conclusions are classical Non Sequiturs.

If its not white, then it should be black is a false assumption. It can be any of the shades between white and black which can include all sorts of gray matter!. No where did my statement imply that only “If Indecent, then you speak to girls“.

For an analogy, “Brahmins usually don’t eat non-vegetarian food” is also a similar statement. People must not implicity assume, that only “If Non Brahmin, you eat non vegetarian food”. It just means that all those people who are vegetarian by choice are that way because they choose to be so.

Second, lets look at the logical fallacy in “If Decent, then you don’t speak to girls” statement above. This is a classical “Affirming the consequent“. So no where does it state that just because one does not speak to girls, the person is Decent. Its not sufficient to the condition of being decent. There are other necessary conditions for Decency to be satisfied. However one of the accepted social norm is that “Decent guys usually don’t speak to girls”.

Again, bringing the Brahmin and not eating non-vegetarian analogy, just not eating non-vegetarian does not make one a Brahmin. However, its an accepted social norm, that “Brahmins usually don’t eat non-vegetarian food”

I would live with such misunderstandings by people, but it hurts when people assume another non sequitur called “Denying the Antecedent“. Using exactly similar equations, mostly this is what people conclude,
If I accept my mistakes, then I am Ordinary (not the Boss).
But I don’t accept my mistakes.
Therefore, I am not Ordinary (I am the Boss).

Some people just think I don’t accept my mistakes because I want to assert my authority as their Boss, but again, that is another logical fallacy that people make. I don’t appear to accept my mistakes because I believe in Logical Authority more than Positional Authority, which I have blogged about a year and a half ago.

Next time around, may be I will learn to be a little more tolerant to such Irrelevant conclusions (non sequiturs).

Soap Opera Ends

The twists and turns of a nearly 18 month saga, came to a “happily everafter” conclusion today. Yes, the sound of the wedding bells are still ringing in my ears, and there is a sense of satisfaction to see one of my closet friend lead a melodramatic string of events to a graceful new beginning.

Of course, time landed yours truly a cameo role, and I am proud that I was in a deal clinchers position, and as tears trickled down the eyes of the bride and her parents just a few minutes before the Muhurtham, there were emotional undercurrents to all those closely involved, and I must admit for a few moments I was overwhelmed with it, not withstanding the fragility of relationships it reaffirmed my faith that endurance prevails over ego.

“Marriages are made in heaven”, its just that if you try to follow the norms in the midst of human egos, you have to REMAKE it !!

Storm after a Lull

The daunting pile of todo’s, the surprise elements of sporadic activity, and every little ounce of delayed work over December, have started to avalanche down this week. I can hardly squeeze time, and the storm after the lull has kept me captivated, very little time and thought cycles I have to spare for the Blog front. Sometimes I feel work is a little unfair, but after all that I have seen, I should have known better.

Humility

Whenever I am in India, day in and day out, I see people with immense hardships just chugging along each day, hiding their pains behind a smile. At the same time, I see lots of psuedo-intellectuals like me just shouting, yelling, getting annoyed and frustrated over small issues. “Empty vessels make more noise not knowing the simple truth, that its all about shoving it down your #@$”. Here read this piece below.

When the husband arrived home, his wife met him at the door sobbing. He asked her what was wrong.

“It’s the pharmacist,” she wailed. “He insulted me something awful on the phone this morning.” Hearing this, the husband immediately headed downtown to confront the pharmacist and demand an apology.

Before he could say more than a word or two, the pharmacist cut him off and said, “Please, just listen to my side of it.”

“This morning my alarm didn’t go off,” the pharmacist began to explain, “so I was late getting up. Going without breakfast, I rushed out to my car only to realize I had locked the house with both my house and car keys inside. I had to break a window to get my keys.

”Then, driving a little too fast, I got pulled over and was given a speeding ticket. Later, about two blocks from the store, I had a flat tire. When I finally arrived at the store there was a bunch of people waiting for me to open up.

”I opened the store and began waiting on these people, and all the while the damn phone was ringing off the hook.”

Taking a breath, he continued, “Then, I had to break a roll of coins against the cash register drawer to make change and they spilled all over the floor. I got down on my hands and knees to pick up the coins, the phone still ringing off the hook. As I stood up, I cracked my head on the open cash drawer. This made me stagger back against a showcase filled with perfume bottles, causing all of them to fall to the floor and break.

”Meanwhile, the phone is still ringing without letting up. When I finally got to answering it, it was your wife. She wanted to know how to use a rectal thermometer. Believe me sir, as God is my witness, all I did was tell her.”

I happened to read this wonderful piece today, had a hearty laugh for a while. If there is one gift that I could get from God, then I think it is Humility.

CaptiveAdaptations - Blog Review

As the year end introspections continue, here are some interesting statistics / graphs of the performance of CaptiveAdaptations Blog after it went live in June. The reporting period is between June 2005 and Dec 2005

Summary of Number of Unique Visitors, Number of Hits, etc is below.

    YearSummary

Breakup on a month/month basis is below. What is interesting is the steady increase of the number of visitors, although December is the only month which dipped on a month-over-month basis. Understandable, since its holiday season, most people have better things to do :)

    MonthlyHistory

Average duration of all visits is roughly around 319 seconds meaning that the site can hold the attention of people for 5 mins. I reckon that is pretty decent.

    AverageVisitDuration

For Technical details, people with Windows OS on their computers topped the list with 77% of the visitors having Windows. On the browser front firefox takes the first place - this is exciting - seems like Firefox has overtaken IE as the most popular browser.

    OSHistory
    BrowserHistory

Also people from America had the most number of Visits, with India taking second place.

    CountrySummary

Paz Vega” was the search phrase that topped the reason for people to visit my site. That is quite interesting in itself. Beauty always seems to beat the brains :)
